    A little about me

Darren McCain has a passion for computers and gaming that goes back to the Atari 2600.  A love of games and a strong curiosity for how they worked soon led to a Commodore 64 and classes in Basic.  Darren has followed the hardware and gaming scene ever since.  Darren has been a nationally ranked player in Quake Arena, Age of Empires, Battlefield 1942, and Battlefield Desert Combat among others and has been sponsored but companies like AMD and Crucial.  Darren is currently an active member of EGO, one of the largest gaming organizations in the United States and an admin on their Battlefield servers. This competitive background gives Darren a unique view on enthusiast hardware with an emphasis on competitive play.

Successfully building and modding custom PCs for LAN parties and case mod competitions across the North West soon led to writing about them. Darren worked with Club Overclocker for years before joining Ninja Lane in 2010, now Hardware Asylum, to continue to indulge in his hardware dabbling. These days Darren games with his wife and two kids all with their own custom builds and gaming tastes.  As a result he has focused on custom builds with an eye for getting the best performance for the buck.

When not fiddling around with all things computer related, Darren can be found playing paintball, board games and soccer with his family.  Those fond memories of loading punch cards into the mainframe to earn gaming money are fading memories replaced with dreams of custom voice activated systems and true virtual reality.
