When it comes to power supplies most people will focus on things like the power rating, cable type and efficiency which makes sense since they are extremely important. There is a fourth value that is rarely talked about because it hasn't changed much, the physical dimensions. A standard ATX power supply measures 150mm x 86mm with 150mm of depth. Depending on the PSU maker the depth measurement could change to accommodate features and power demands.
For instance, when PSUs started accepting modular cables the PSU case would get slightly longer to accommodate the plugs. When power capacity started to rise the accepted standard grew from 150mm to 180mm and has stayed that way for well over 10 years. Because of this many people have forgotten that the physical dimensions of your power supply matter when building a computer.
In this review we will be looking at a new PSU from Cooler Master called the V850 SFX Gold. The “V” series is wuote popular due to the modular design and affordable price however this V850 Gold is different in that all of that power has been packaged into a SFX form factor.
To put that into perspective the SFX form factor measures in at 100mm x 125mm x 63.5mm making it one of the smallest PSUs you can buy that is based on a widely accepted standard.
Here we have three items to provide a bit of scale. First is the V850 SFX Gold pictured in front. Behind it you’ll find a “old” Corsair 850W ATX with the full 180mm depth along with a single 2.5” SSD to provide some reference.
Much has changed over the years. The Corsair PSU is not fully modular and was built to support 4-way video card setups. Due to the size the V850 SFX is built a little different.
