In the last episode the duo spends some time building a few gaming rigs for the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and if you were to learn anything from that episode is that you don’t need a lot of power to play even the latest AAA game titles.  So, why bother with Threadripper?  In this episode we explore some of the hype surrounding the new Threadripper 3960X and 3970X processors.

One thing that AMD does well is marketing.  There are times when AMD is leading the pack launching new technology long before Intel.  The Athlon64 prompted Intel to release X64 processing extensions and Ryzen left Intel scrambling to add even more cores to an already overpowered platform.  Thing is Ryzen wasn’t all that powerful, it was a pain to overclock and in single threaded performance it was pretty slow however, it excelled in two segments.  First, the most hyped processor release that had gamers tripping over their wallets to buy everything AMD had,  Second, the best marketing campaign ever showing that they could spin a slow platform into the most powerful CPU money could buy, especially for those with little to no buying power.  It didn’t matter if gamers really tripped over their wallets to buy, or not buy them BUT. It got Intel to wake up and release the best gaming processor ever. The Core i9 9900k.

Why Core i9 when really it should be a Core i7?  Cause: AMD Marketing and the perceived advantage the Ryzen 9 had over the market.

Dennis feels that the new Threadripper 3 is another marketing opportunity and if any of the launch reviews are correct that may very well be the case.

Of course, with that being said Dennis has three Threadripper motherboards in for review and a shiny new 3960X waiting to be abused so even Hardware Asylum is not immune to the AMD hype.
