    Show Notes

As of this recording it has been over 5 months since we have gone into lockdown to stop the spread of COVID-19.  Since then we have had plenty of idiots thwart those efforts, catch COVID and die.  Well, most likely survived but still, only after spreading it to almost everyone they have come in contact with.  Sadly there is no end in sight and with many claiming that we won’t see relief until well into 2021, if ever.

During the lockdown we had high hopes for the summer and the conventions and trade shows that would take place including Hackfort, here in Boise Idaho, Computex, in Taipei Taiwan, Sip Idaho again, here in Boise and PAX in Seattle.  Sadly every one of these shows has been canceled or delayed with a few exploring a new option.

When all of us started working from home the widespread use of web conferences took over.  This allowed us to maintain contact with our co-workers, vendors and even family while staying put to keep our selves safe.  Of course the web conference isn’t a new thing, for remote workers making a phone call or having a web meeting is pretty common.  However, lazy managers often require physical contact to monitor work practices of their employees and to make inappropriate advances to members of the opposite sex.

It would seem that the web conference may also play a part in saving the convention and trade show.  PAX recently announced that they would be broadcasting PAX online making the event free for everyone.  CES 2021 is going fully digital next year allowing attendees to witness the CES glory from the privacy of their home.

As with anything there are right and wrong solutions and in this episode we talk about the digital convention and what might be the best and worse things to come out of it.
