While the only constant in the world is change and we cannot always agree that the changes that are being made are for the best. When it comes to physical media there are some rather fierce discussions on both sides of the fence. Those who enjoy physical media for movies and games often have good experiences and what to see that continue. For those on the other side they likely have never known it was possible and find the process difficult and unnecessary.
Things get interesting when you look at from the perspective of the companies who issue the physical devices. For them, this is an additional cost that can impact overall profits and will often cite storage concerns as a primary driver. Bottom line, they are looking to make a profit and really have no interest in future concerns provided that shareholders are happy and that employees get a paycheck.
Where these trends collide is at the nexus between hardware (computer and tvs) and software (movies and games) and how the availability of one will determine what happens to the other. A good example is the abandonment of external drive bays in personal computers. With the adoption of platforms like Steam you no longer need to install an optical drive to install a game or watch a movie. Likewise, the lack of movies and games supporting 8K video resolutions has effectively obsoleted any reason for building 8K video panels and thus 8K gaming.
