The death of physical media is also mirroring many of the technical advancements that have been popular such as 8K media, 3D movies and gaming. For many years CES hosted companies showing off the latest in 8K hardware and while the popular phrase “build it and they will come” was once real it seems we have reached an equilibrium in advancement. Not only is there absolutely no 8K media available but the actual benefit is lost on fleshbag humans and our poor eyesight.
Yes, its true, from your couch you cannot tell the difference between a 4k movie and an 8k movie due to the resolution being too high.
Of course, innovation has not completely stopped and while streaming services promise to deliver affordable content, they also hold all the keys and can dictate the terms however will benefit their bottom line. To combat this, we can look at a hidden premium service called, Kaleidescape.
This company was founded in 2001 and is somehow able to redistribute movies in better than disk quality as a file you download. Because the file is downloaded to their device it works much like a DVR allowing you access to the movie whenever you want without the service interruptions common to streaming services and with quality better than you would normally expect from a physical disk. Right now, Kaleidescape is a service that many home theater enthusiasts have subscribed to but, with the removal of physical movie disks it may be the only option available.
