Ducky Cushion 98 Tri-Mode Mechanical Keyboard Review
Author: Dennis GarciaDucky Cushion 98 Software and Conclusion
Ducky doesn’t use a traditional software driver suite instead relying on a zero-software policy where changes can be issued directly from the keyboard and stored in the onboard firmware. This can be quite a shock if you are not experienced in this type of configuration. Fortunately, most functionality can be accessed via keyboard hot keys if you prefer to ignore the software solution.
Ducky is bringing VIA support to the Cushion 98. This VIA implementation was demonstrated as part of the product launch, but the final firmware and downloadable configuration files are not yet available.
I expect the VIA configuration to closely mirror the Ducky OK-M.
I have been using the Cushion 98 as my daily driver for over a week mostly with the black pad installed and find it easily meets my needs for both work and gaming. Switching back to an 98% keyboard does requires some adjustment but the size is surprisingly close to my daily ROG Strix keyboard.
The silver keyboard came with the Ducky Shush Green switches and darker grey with the Ducky Shush reds. The green is described as a silent tactical switch while the reds are a silent linear, both mimic their Cherry MX equivalents nicely and I found I preferred the greens over time. I expected the feel to be a bit mushy based on the press descriptions of the cushion system. This was not the case!
For gaming I felt right at home after my ROG Strix keyboard. The addition of the ten key section makes work tasks easier and I noticed no adverse change in my performance once I got used to the cushion feel. I was unable to make changes pending the release of the VIA support but found the functionality quite good right out of the box!
There was a time when choosing a mechanical keyboard was a straightforward decision. Today, that process is far more complicated. Thankfully Ducky continues to innovate with the Cushion 98. For gamers, programmers, writers, engineers, accountants, and spreadsheet users, this layout strikes an excellent balance between efficiency and comfort.
The Ducky Cushion 98 is a great choice for PC enthusiasts because it delivers a premium mechanical keyboard experience with enthusiast-level customization, quiet Shrush switches, a flexible 98-percent layout, and innovative features like Nest Mount and Quick Latch. It combines the feel of a custom keyboard with the reliability of a finished product.
