Enthusiasts across all walks of life tend to have a “type”. Car lovers have a type they tend to focus on and will spend most of their time learning everything there is to know. Golfers often obsess over club fitting and can often tell you more about ball flight than we care to know.
For retro computer hardware enthusiasts, the “type” is often generational and rooted in past experiences. Dennis happens to be a fan of all computer hardware but has started to focus on building retro machines based on the Baby AT form factor. While these components are quite old by modern standards they are new enough that they can still be usable for certain things. The same can be said for the Commodore 64 or even Apple II, and while these are popular in the community there is a limit to what they can do without going to extreme measures.
In this episode Dennis is showing off his latest Retro PC project, a Tandy 1000 TX. When it comes to the Tandy 1000 the TX is clearly the pinnacle when it comes to the hardware offering. It features a 286 processor, supports up to 768k of DRAM and can be upgraded with up to five expansion cards to do various tasks. Despite this expandability, many users bought them to be their first computer and never really did any upgrades.
The intention will be to feature this Tandy 1000 TX in a #SEPTandy series of videos, share some stories and see what this little machine can do.
