MSI MPG X870I Edge Ti Evo WiFi Mini ITX Motherboard Review
Author: Dennis GarciaConclusion
In this review we looked at the MSI MPG X870I Edge TI Evo WiFi Motherboard. This board is built on the AMD X870 chipset supporting the new 9000 Series Granite Ridge and other AM5 based processors. Unlike motherboards we normally feature on this website the MSI MPG series is designed for mainstream usage and our X870I Edge Ti Evo is the smaller Mini ITX brother to many of the other boards in the MSI lineup. Out of the box you are greeted with a very feature rich motherboard with options to expand and upgrade beyond what is normally in a mainstream system build.
Mainstream builds are often driven by budget where the user will look to Min/Max the component choices to get the best performance with the minimal effort. This translates into using lower cost processors, less aggressive memory specifications and realistic storage options. The trap that many hardware makers fall into is when focusing on mainstream options, they rarely consider “upgrades” after the initial build.
This is where the MPG X870 Edge TI Evo WiFi has an advantage and what makes it an attractive motherboard for system builders looking to take advantage of the smaller form factor but unwilling to miss out on feature found on other boards. Of course, the Mini ITX form factor only has a single expansion slot but, this board comes with three M.2 slots with one being part of a removable Xpander board holding two of the elusive SATA 6 ports. This removable expansion board allows this Mini ITX motherboard to have big board features with the option to remove them if they are not needed.
The MPG X870I Edge Evo does support a number of convenience features including an extra-large M.2 heatsink with EZ-Clip for tool less access. Along with a number of onboard features including a Debug LED, EZConn port and three PWM fan headers.
Despite the small size the board was as surprisingly good overclocker boasting some of the highest processor clocks featured in our AMD Ryzen motherboard reviews and was attained using an “no effort” auto overclocking feature built into the UEFI. It would be worth giving this setting at try though, seems to have the best impact when the system is properly watercooled. Match this with a high speed memory kit and you’ll have a gaming build that may outlast the titles you are currently playing.
Overall, the MSI MPG X870 Edge TI Evo WiFi was a pleasant surprise both from overall features and out of box performance. The board supports USB 10g, 20g and 40g connections and is proudly bathed in a titanium and black color scheme that blends perfectly with every white component I had in the Hardware Asylum Labs.
